How To Give The Gospel To Atheists

The real reason atheists reject the gospel

A common misconception on presenting the gospel to atheists is proving that God exists to the atheist, the reason why this is not effective is due to the self-righteousness of the atheist, I’ve debated atheists before and I would answer every question they threw at me, and they would keep throwing more and more questions, they will never give up, regardless of how much scientific proof for God I would present to them. The real problem is summed up in one word, “pride,” if you talk to the average atheist, they will tell you that they are a “good person,” thus proving they are self-righteous. The Bible says there is nobody that is good and there is nobody that is righteous (Rom. 3:10-18), all have sinned (Rom. 3:23, Ecc. 7:20, Gal. 3:22), the heart of man is evil and wicked (Jer. 17:9, Matt. 15:18-19, Matt. 7:21-23). Every religion, whether it be Islam, Shinto, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Scientology, or Zoroastrianism, all teach in some way, shape, or form, that you are a “good person” and/or that salvation is obtained trough good works or being a “good person,” in other words, man’s self-righteousness is what gets them to that particular religion’s version of heaven. Bible-believing Christianity is the only religion that teaches that you are not a “good person” and that your supposed “good works” won’t get you into heaven (Acts 13:38-39, Rom. 3:27-28, 2 Tim. 1:8-9, Php. 3:9, Rom. 4:4-5, Rom. 11:6, Gal. 2:16, Eph. 2:8-9, Tit. 3:5), in fact, the Bible shows that salvation by good works allows a person to boast (Rom. 3:27, Eph. 2:8-9), being saved by good works allows people to boast in pride. The real reason why the atheist doesn’t want to believe there is a God is because he knows he would have to give an account for his life, and that he is not a good person.

Presenting the gospel to atheists

In order for an atheist to be saved, he needs to first realize that he is a sinner, Jesus Christ came to call sinners to repentance (Mark 2:17). Somebody who isn’t sick doesn’t need to see a doctor, those that are whole are in no need of the physician, there is no point going to the doctor if you are not sick. If a person is a righteous person and a “good person” than he wouldn’t need the savior to come and die on the cross for his sins. The very fact that Jesus had to come and die on the cross in order to atone for the sins of man (Rom. 5:6-11, Rom. 6:23). Once Jesus saves you, he imputes HIS righteousness to you (Rom. 4:6-25, 2 Cor. 5:18-21). Once the atheist understands that he is a sinner, he will have Godly sorrow that works repentance to salvation (2 Cor. 7:8-10). It’s important to keep the subject on sin, and make sure the atheist understands that he is a sinner, and that he cannot save himself (Tit. 3:5). At that point, show the plan of salvation to the atheist. The atheist must believe in his heart that Jesus Christ died for his sins according to the scriptures, he was buried, and rose again the third (1 Cor. 15:1-4, Rom 10:9-10), and put his faith and trust in Jesus and his finished work on the cross (Rom. 3:24-28), and he must call upon the name of the Lord (Rom. 10:9-13).

God is who provides salvation, salvation is not a bargain that we have to pay back or some kind of conditional deal we make where we have to continue to live in holiness and self-righteousness in order to earn salvation, that is nothing more than Roman Catholicism and it’s damnable works-righteous gospel.
