Historical And Scriptural Proof For Paul's Apostleship

Scriptural proof:

Peter affirmed Paul’s apostleship in 2 Peter 3:15-16:

2 Peter 3:15-16
(KJV) - "And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

Historical proof for Paul's apostleship:

Ignatius of Antioch (AD 35-110):

Ignatius of Antioch was a 1st-century pupil of the original Apostles. (1)(2)(3)

This 1st-century Bishop gives evidence that supports Paul’s association with the other Apostles of Jesus Christ, thus confirming Paul's apostleship:

“I do not command you, as Peter and Paul did.” (4)

“You are initiated into the mysteries of the Gospel with Paul, the holy, the martyred, the deservedly most happy, at whose feet may I be found, when I shall attain to God; who in all his Epistles makes mention of you in Christ Jesus.” (5)

Polycarp of Smyrna (AD 69-155):

Polycarp affirms Paul’s apostleship.

“For neither I, nor any other such one, can come up to the wisdom of the blessed and glorified Paul. He, when among you, accurately and steadfastly taught the word of truth in the presence of those who were then alive. And when absent from you, he wrote you a letter, which, if you carefully study, you will find to be the means of building you up in that faith which has been given you, and which, being followed by hope, and preceded by love towards God, and Christ, and our neighbour, is the mother of us all.” (6)

“For if a man cannot govern himself in such matters, how shall he enjoin them on others? If a man does not keep himself from covetousness, he shall be defiled by idolatry, and shall be judged as one of the heathen. But who of us are ignorant of the judgment of the Lord? Do we not know that the saints shall judge the world? as Paul teaches. But I have neither seen nor heard of any such thing among you, in the midst of whom the blessed Paul laboured, and who are commended in the beginning of his Epistle. For he boasts of you in all those Churches which alone then knew the Lord; but we [of Smyrna] had not yet known him.” (7)

Clement of Rome (33 AD – 99 AD):

He affirmed Paul’s apostleship:

“Owing to envy, Paul also obtained the reward of patient endurance, after being seven times thrown into captivity, compelled to flee, and stoned. After preaching both in the east and west, he gained the illustrious reputation due to his faith, having taught righteousness to the whole world, and come to the extreme limit of the west, and suffered martyrdom under the prefects. Thus was he removed from the world, and went into the holy place, having proved himself a striking example of patience.” (8)

“Take up the epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul. What did he write to you at the time when the gospel first began to be preached? Truly, under the inspiration of the Spirit, he wrote to you concerning himself, and Cephas, and Apollos, because even then parties had been formed among you.” (9)

Matthew 5:17-18 Twisted By Works-Salvationist & Non-Dispensationalist Heretics

Matthew 5 isn’t written for Christians today, it’s dispensationally for the millennial kingdom.

Matthew 5-7 is the gospel for the kingdom.

What is the gospel of the kingdom?

Jesus Christ came as the king, he offered the kingdom to the Jewish people and the Jews rejected it.

Matthew 5-7 are laws, rules, and standards for the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:35 (KJV) – “Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.”

Matthew 5:14 (KJV) – “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

These verses are talking about a city on the earth.

The kingdom of heaven is the physical earthly kingdom (hence why the kingdom of heaven can suffer violence and be taken by force).

Matthew 11:12 (KJV) - "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force."

In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus is not saying to not change the law, he is saying nothing will pass until everything is fulfilled.

What is the fulfillment of the law?

Jesus Christ fulfilled the law!

Romans 10:4 (KJV) – “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”

John 1:17 (KJV) – “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion was the fulfillment of the law:

Luke 24:44-48 (KJV) – “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things.”

Luke 24:44-48 lines up with Acts 13:29-31, and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV) - "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."

Acts 13:29-31 (KJV) - "And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30 But God raised him from the dead: 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people."

Jesus Christ’s crucifixion fulfilled the prophecies in Psalms 2:1-12, Psalms 16:9-11, Psalms 22:1-31, Psalms 69:1-36, Isaiah 53:1-12, Isaiah 61:1-3, Zechariah 12:10.

Historical (Extra-Biblical) Proof For The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ

Historical proof and quotes from non-Christians proving the account of darkness in Matthew 27:45.

Phlegon (second century AD), Greek historian, (The 202nd Olympiad is dated between July 29-June 33):

“In the 4th year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was a great eclipse of the sun, greater than had ever been known before, for at the 6th hour the day was changed into night and the stars were seen in the heavens. An earthquake occurred in Bythinia and overthrew a great part of the city of Nicaea.”

John Philoponus (
490 – 570 AD), an Alexandrian historian, confirmed the writings of Phlegon:

“And about this darkness, Phlegon recalls it in the Olympiads…he mentioned the eclipse which took place during the crucifixion of the Lord Christ, and no other (eclipse), it is clear that he did not know from his sources about any (similar) eclipse in previous times, and this is shown by the historical account of Tiberius Caesar.”

Psalms 22:1-2 (KJV) - "To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. FULFILLMENT:
Matthew 27:46 (KJV) - "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

FULFILLMENT:
Matthew 27:41-44 (KJV) - "Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth."

BIBLE PROPHECY:

Psalms 22:15 (KJV) - "My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death."

FULFILLMENT:
Matthew 27:48 (KJV) - "And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink."

BIBLE PROPHECY:
Psalms 22:17-18 (KJV) - "I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."

FULFILLMENT:
John 19:23
(KJV) - "Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout."

The 3 Resurrections In Scripture

A common lie from post-trib heretics is that there is only 1 future resurrection (a lot of them seem to think that the rapture happens at Christ's second coming, and they twist Matthew 24:29-31 to try and prove this). Post-tribbers have to deny that there are three resurrections in scripture because it would destroy the post-trib heresy.

1 Corinthians 15:20-24 mentions three parts of the resurrection:

1 Corinthians 15:20-24 (KJV) - "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power."

The three resurrections:

The first resurrection ("Christ the firstfruits"):

The first resurrection is Christ and the Old Testament saints.

Matthew 27:52-53
(KJV) - "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

The second resurrection ("They that are Christ's")

The second resurrection is the rapture of Christians who are "sealed unto the day of redemption" (Eph. 4:30).

Ephesians 1:10-14
(KJV) - "That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

The third resurrection ("Then cometh the end"):

The third resurrection is for saints in the time of Jacob's trouble and the millennial kingdom, Revelation 20:5 shows that this won't happen until after the 1000 year reign of Christ.

Revelation 20:5
(KJV) - "But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection."

People Who Taught A Pre-Trib Rapture BEFORE John Nelson Darby In 1830

Post-trib heretics love to claim that nobody before 1830 taught a pre-trib rapture, this claim is nonsense, there are plenty of examples of a pre-trib rapture being taught hundreds of years before 1830.

Irenaeus (130 – 202 AD):

“Those nations however, who did not of themselves raise up their eyes unto heaven, nor returned thanks to their Maker, nor wished to behold the light of truth, but who were like blind mice concealed in the depths of ignorance, the word justly reckons “as waste water from a sink, and as the turning-weight of a balance — in fact, as nothing;”(1) so far useful and serviceable to the just, as stubble conduces towards the growth of the wheat, and its straw, by means of combustion, serves for working gold. And therefore, when in the end the Church shall be suddenly caught up from this, it is said, “There shall be tribulation such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be.”(2) For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption.”
(Irenaeus, 'Against Heresies' 5.29)

Ephraim the Syrian (306 – 373 AD):

"Or do you not believe unless you see with your eyes? See to it that this sentence be not fulfilled among you of the prophet who declares: “Woe to those who desire to see the day of the Lord!” For all the saints and elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins. And so, brothers most dear to me, it is the eleventh hour, and the end of the world comes to the harvest, and angels, armed and prepared, hold sickles in their hands, awaiting the empire of the Lord."
(Ephraim the Syrian, 'On the Last Times 2')

Joseph Mede (1586 - 1638 AD):

"I will add this more, namely, what may be conceived to be the cause of this rapture of the saints on high to meet the Lord in the clouds, rather than to wait his coming to earth....What if it be, that they may be preserved during the Conflagration of the earth and the works thereof, 2 Pet.3:10, that as Noah and his family were preserved from the Deluge by being lift up above the waters in the Ark; so should the saints at the Conflagration be lift up in the clouds unto their Ark, Christ, to be preserved there from the deluge of fire, wherein the wicked shall be consumed?"
("The Works of Joseph Mede," 1672, London edition, Book IV, p.776)
