The Eternal Security Of The Believer

sealed-envelope – Broken Believers

The doctrine of eternal security is one of the most controversial doctrines in modern professing Christianity. The biblical doctrine of eternal security simply states that God saves us, we don't have to merit our salvation by holiness or righteousness, salvation is completely of God.

Jesus paid for price for all my sins on the cross (Acts 13:39, Titus 2:14, Colossians 2:13, 1 John 1:7) Christians are only righteous through Jesus Christ. If there is no eternal security, that would mean we would be saved by works because our salvation would depend on us having to do stuff to keep ourselves saved.

The Bible says that you can know that you are saved.

1 John 5:13 - "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

If salvation was dependant on us having to continually strive in holiness or having to do something to keep ourselves saved, you will never have the assurance of your salvation, you will never truly know if you are saved, you will constantly be questioning and wondering if you saved.

Scripture is clear that God is who gives us eternal life.

1 John 5:11 - "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son."

God is who provides salvation, God is the author of our salvation. God saves us, we don't save ourselves by continuing in holiness. Without eternal security, that would mean that salvation is not completely of God because it depends on us and our own supposed righteousness.

Scriptures that prove eternal security:

An important thing to note is that a common theme in these verses is that God is the one giving us eternal life, God controls our salvation, God paid for our sins and he keeps us saved. Salvation is completely of God, and not of our own holiness or righteousness.

John 5:24"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."

John 6:35 - "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

John 6:39 - "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."

John 10:28-29 - "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand."

John 17:11-12 - "And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled."

Romans 8:35-39 - "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

1 Corinthians 1:7-8 - "So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ."

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 - "Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts."

Ephesians 1:12-13 - "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,"

Ephesians 4:30 - "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

2 Timothy 4:18 - "And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."

1 Peter 1:3-5 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."

Salvation is all of Christ, we are wretched sinners in the eyes of God, we are so dirty, God had to send his Son to die on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus paid it all, and he keeps us saved.
