Debunking An Article From Catholic Answers Regarding The Authority Of The Church Over Scripture

I was reading an article from Catholic Answers and the article proved that Roman Catholics deny the Bible and prefer to submit to fallible men rather than to the scriptures. Roman Catholics don’t believe the Bible, the Catholic Church had added pagan man-made traditions, many of which contradict the word of God (Matt. 15:1-9), and claimed that the church decreed them. For any devout Catholic, if the Church says something then it makes it official doctrine, but for a devout Bible-believer, if the scriptures say something then it makes it official doctrine, that is one of the biggest differences between Roman Catholic pagans and born again Bible-believing Christians.

I will show some excerpts from the Catholic Answers article, and you will see that they openly deny that the Bible is inspired by God.

"Catholics are often accused of arguing in a “vicious circle,” proving the Bible by the Church, and the Church by the Bible. We must be careful to avoid this by explaining that we put the Church before the Bible because the Church existed first and wrote and compiled the Bible. The authority of the Bible depends on that of the Church. Then we use the Bible to prove the Church; we use it not as an inspired volume, but merely as a historical document. From the Gospels as historical documents we learn that Christ founded a Church, but the authority of the Gospels as inspired writings rests on the word of the Church."

So according to Catholic Answers, the Bible depends on “the church,” so in other words, it’s not the church submitting to the Bible, the Bible submits to the church…

They also make the blasphemous claim that the Bible not an inspired volume. These Catholics are openly saying they don’t hold the Bible as given by inspiration of God, to them it’s only a “historical document” that proves “the church.” They prove that Catholics don’t believe the Bible thus denying the power of God (Mark 12:24).

But what saith the scriptures?

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) – For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

They also claim that “the church existed before the Bible” which is a common lie from Catholics, and a cultic control tactic to get people submitting to the words of men (Popes, Priests, church councils, church decrees, papal bulls etc.) rather than to the word of God.

But what saith the scriptures? Did the word of God exist before “the church?”

Romans 3:1-2 (KJV) – “What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.”

Acts 7:38 (KJV) – “This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us.”

The scriptures were given to the Jews, NOT to “the church.”

There are also references to “the scriptures” all throughout the New Testament, how can the apostles and Jesus Christ himself be saying “it is written” if there was no written scripture before “the church?” The phrase “it is written” is found 80 times in the Bible!

When a man of God speaks, he is to speak the oracles of God (notice how Paul and Peter only mention the scriptures, they don’t mention anything about “church tradition”)

1 Peter 4:11 (KJV) – If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”

Hebrews 5:12
(KJV) – “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.”

"The Scriptures themselves assert that they are incomplete and send us to the Church. “Many other signs also did Jesus . . . which are not written.” (John 20:30). “Thinkest thou that thou understandest what thou readest ?” . . . . “How can I, unless some man show me” (Acts 8:30, 31)."

The context of Acts 8:30-31 is Philip was instructed by God to meet this man and explain to him that Jesus was the lamb led to the slaughter (Acts 8:26-27), so Philip explained what just happened, and he quoted from scripture, not from “church tradition.” In no way does this teach that we have to rely on men to understand the Bible and that we can’t read the Bible on our own as the Catholics twist this verse to say.

John 20:30 was before the word of God was completed, there were still things that had to be revealed to the apostles, and the apostle Paul in particular, so using this to try and prove that we have to rely on “the church” to get doctrine is twisting this verse.

"Christ nowhere told men to go to a book to learn his doctrine. He himself wrote nothing down. But he did say to Peter: “Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church” (Matt. 16:18); and to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Go ye teaching therefore all nations” (Matt. 28:19). “He that hears you, hears me, he that despises you, despises me, he that despises me despises him that sent me” (Luke 10:16). The apostles went forth and taught according to Christ’s command."

Making such a claim shows a gross ignorance of the gospels. There are plenty of examples in the gospels where Jesus Christ referenced scripture and there are even instances where Jesus rebuked people for not reading the scriptures.

Matthew 21:42 (KJV) – “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?”

Matthew 22:29-33 (KJV) – “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. 31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. 33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.”

John 5:39 (KJV) – “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

The bottom-line is that Roman Catholicism is a pagan cult. Roman Catholics have set aside the word of God for the traditions of men.

Finally, I will end off with scriptural warning about trusting in man.

Jeremiah 17:5 (KJV) – “Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.”

Psalms 118:8 (KJV) – “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”

Psalms 146:3 (KJV) – “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”
